What actually drains your battery while you play

April 2, 2026 · Elias Vogt

We time battery use on every game we cover, and the differences are bigger than people expect. Two games can look similar and behave completely differently once your phone starts heating up.

The biggest culprits are high frame rates, heavy particle effects, and constant network activity. A racing game pushing 60 frames with fancy lighting will drink your battery far faster than a static puzzle. Screen brightness matters more than any in-game setting, so start there.

The good news is most games hide useful options in their settings menu. Cap the frame rate, drop effects to medium, and turn off background sync if the game offers it. You often lose almost nothing visually while gaining a lot of playtime.

My rough rule: if a game warms your hand within ten minutes, it's working hard, and you should check its graphics settings before a long session. A cool phone is a happy phone.
