Emberfall Saga
Emberfall Saga is the kind of RPG that respects your time without dumbing itself down. Battles are turn-based and play out on a small grid, so positioning matters, but you're never fumbling with tiny buttons. Tapping a character brings up a clean radial menu, and moving across the field is drag-and-drop. It reads well even on a phone held one-handed on a train.
The writing is better than it needed to be. Companions have their own reasons for tagging along, and choices in dialogue nudge the story in small but noticeable ways. I appreciated that grinding is optional — I finished several chapters without ever feeling forced to farm enemies just to keep up.
It does ask more of your battery than a casual game, especially during the flashier spell animations, which you can thankfully tone down in settings. Turn effects to medium and you'll get a long, comfortable session out of it. A standout for anyone who misses proper RPGs on the go.
